I've not been up to painting or able to take photographs as I have been dealing with a severe whiplash injury sustained in June. My husband is willing to do all the grunt work to make this workshop and presentation a go, wish me luck that I may do it without too much pain being aggravated.tess stiebenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14990043775194246617noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7492516578094514967.post-53071202703207075682017-08-14T15:07:00.002-07:002017-08-14T15:07:07.357-07:00Feeding time<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have to say the Arts community and birding community are tops, they pulled off a great event. I was honoured to be a part of their fifth birding festival. We arrived in Creston on teusday eve to set up the exhibition wednesday at <a href="http://www.kunzegallery.ca/" target="_blank">Kunze Gallery,</a> which is attached to the iconic grain elevators in town.<br />

My husband makes this all possible due his support in all areas. He gives me encouragement to keep going. He packs, loads and unloads the truck, climbs the ladders, wields the hammer, installs the exhibitions and informs the public about my work. He's also my chauffeur, sets up camp and camp cook. I'm lucky to have such wonderful support. </div>

We almost missed this heron as a few moments later a truck roared by and he took flight. If my camera lens was focusing I would have had fantastic flight shots, but alas when one has to use auto to find the subject then switch to manuel to hold the focus that leaves flight shots out.<br />

Cinnamon teals, there were quite a few. Yes, I photograph in bright light, any light really, rather than the golden hours as I just may not get that subject again, one never knows. I am a painter and as my photos are for art reference I'm not looking for those shots that stand alone as a photograph, I like shadow and contrast. I like seeing what the birds are doing during the day and I like being out in the fresh air an sunshine.<br />

First comes the research time. My husband and I tend to spend many hours in the field watching and photographing birds. The more time spent watching birds the easier it becomes depicting them. It helps having a quality SLR so as to limit the distortion that is prominent in low quality cameras. We've seen a multitude of paintings in the last few years where my husband quickly picked out that the artist either used someone else's photos without putting in the required field work, or that the camera distorted the birds image and they then unknowingly painted those distortions. Being the curious types, we questions these artists and politely suggest they go bird watching to gain valuable information and if at all possible work from their own reference material as it does make a difference.<br />

Northern BC, too funny that I tend to tell my husband that he walks into my landscapes and yet I see I must do the same to him.<br />
<br />
Then comes the downloading of a multitude of images, discarding the worst ones, the ones that will never be good enough to use, though I tend not to be ruthless enough in this department. Then I print out varied images (poses) onto quality photo-paper that I've chosen to fit the design of my painting. I don't slavishly copy the photo for if I wanted photo realism I would frame the photo. As creator of my ideas many works change throughout the painting process. When I work in acrylic I either start with the bird then do the background or I pre-paint a background that may sit for up to five years before the right bird or animal feels right for the design structure.<br />

Though now I sometimes grab a brush and draw with paint in a free manner, especially fun to do with florals. Some paintings have sat in what I considered a finished state for a few years when I decide the painting can be much better. Sometimes reworking a piece is a good idea, other times it heralds disaster.<br />

Here am I, busy painting a hummingbird. During the event I was asked that wonderful question of how long it would take to complete. Well I had no idea at the time if I would finish it yesterday or not. When I paint I lose myself to the process. Even though I spent time chatting with children and adults, I kept painting. Took a few breaks and was surprised when Gerald said it was 4:00pm as I began at 11:00am. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUvpQBl87XetiHGYtfd6HwZSPyq0Y8tNlR05jizNMgE9u3LlaPbuSTLX49lfkcUkzaom0lKCQWIyWaz4vglg3PsI2vdGPiVMYe7CF__Cto-PZA4r6drGczJtYloR7FF3LTG0cUXcRdc1pQ/s1600/IMG_9624.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUvpQBl87XetiHGYtfd6HwZSPyq0Y8tNlR05jizNMgE9u3LlaPbuSTLX49lfkcUkzaom0lKCQWIyWaz4vglg3PsI2vdGPiVMYe7CF__Cto-PZA4r6drGczJtYloR7FF3LTG0cUXcRdc1pQ/s320/IMG_9624.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
These are the images I worked on. I sketched the Rufous hummingbirds onto watercolor paper and painted the backgrounds the day before as seen in the lefthand image. The bottom right image was worked from that state to a finish during the the event. I can now answer that wonderful question how long will it take me to paint the hummingbird, I now know that the 5 x7 inch painting took four and a half hours start to finish. Mind that each painting created has a multitude of variables, so one painting may take four hours while another the same size may take ten hours, it all depends on the subject and the amount of detail.<br />
<br />
<br />
The painting process consisted of using a fine tip brush and dabbing tiny bits of color onto the paper to capture the colorful iridescence that the birds display as well as using subtle washes of color built up one on the other.<br />
<br />

We decided to drive all the way out to Gingolox, it was rainy most of the day but the clouds seemed to part enough for us to get some shots between the raindrops. Nearing gingolox we had a large white timber wolf cross our path, but due the rain on the windshield there was no way to capture an image. What a spectacular memory to hold though.<br />

Poles across from the hospital in Prince Rupert, there are three still standing and a sawed off stump where one has been removed. There are burial mounds near these poles. When I asked at the visitor booth about these poles and the graves noticed, I was told that the hospital was built on an old original peoples burial ground. There are no plaques stating this, but one of the poles had a mourning wreath set below it. The plaque's here are unreadable as vandalized with spray paint. Sadly, disrespect for traditional burials is encountered all across this country.<br />

One of Freda Diesing's Poles in Prince Rupert. Eagle Chief's Pole carved by Freda Diesing and Josiah Tait. The pole is a reproduction of a pole from Tanu on Haida Gwaii. From bottom up is grizzly bear with frog, killer whale, hawk, human face, eagle and three watchmen. </div>

Not regular portraits, rather fun, enjoyable cheerful and even humorous portraits.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"Grandparents Blessing"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
12x12, acrylic on canvas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">Our grandson was given this colorful feather headress on his birthday from his Aunty which he promptly wore and that I knew someday I would paint. Guppy shapes were added swimming about as last time we visited we were shown his tank full of delightful wee fish. Though painting on a bright red background was a challenge it adds to the lightheartedness of the piece.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"> I had so much fun doing "Grandparents Blessing" that it inspired me to work on a portrait of my daughter which I stole unbeknown to her offline.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPV9Kjf9XNsatO-2-swZlTL7g4wuAlh4ESl4pbgIJ5N2hfaDAeOJAFio2uOhHaP_Ks38wH9anJWZgM0kf-CNA4wWkRd5qUTAaoZxsFSDmeiKkDdGx4EKfOZwml9sBxbqeQ4lA74JulG7t4/s1600/IMG_3292+copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPV9Kjf9XNsatO-2-swZlTL7g4wuAlh4ESl4pbgIJ5N2hfaDAeOJAFio2uOhHaP_Ks38wH9anJWZgM0kf-CNA4wWkRd5qUTAaoZxsFSDmeiKkDdGx4EKfOZwml9sBxbqeQ4lA74JulG7t4/s320/IMG_3292+copy.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"Squirrel"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
12x12, acrylic on canvas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When I saw the photo of my zany artistic girl on line sporting a moustache I was excited by the opportunity to use it in a painting. Now I don't much favour squirrels as they remind me of rats, which I am even less fond of having once been chased by a large rat when I was hugely pregnant with my son.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Aside from that my daughter loves them, so I photograph the critters that run around the tree out front and have captured them in various poses, which is great, as the squirrel has made the painting even more special. I admit this one is cute and after photographing theses critters for years they are now eking out space in my work. </div>

Spring is arriving on wings. Today we drove out to Stony Plain to pick up the exhibition pieces and were told that my crochet sculptural Spirit Vessels garnered a lot of attention. Outside the Centre was a carving that is being remodelled by a chickadee. It looks like tape was placed over a previous hole but this wee fella is not deterred in the least.<br />

Heading south from Stony Plain we came across Tundra Swans and canvas backs. There were also Mallards, Coots, Canadian Geese, Buffleheads and Redheads on the marsh. Most were too far out of range for my 300 prime lens, this image is greatly cropped. Many of these swans have a yellow mark at the base of their bill near the eye, click on photo to see image large.<br />

Next we headed south to Clifford E Lee Nature Sanctuary and had a few White-fronted Geese fly overhead while we walked the boardwalk. There were Canadian Geese, mallards and one male shoveler on the pond. The wind blew up though luckily we were on the edge of a passing storm so we only got hit with cold raindrops for a short period. The ground is dry and dusty here already as there was lack of snow for moisture this past winter. Rain is definitely needed.<br />

Song Sparrows are heading north, there were a group of about thirty. Being secretive ground birds that spend time scratching under fallen branches in the leaf litter looking for bugs and seeds it took awhile to get a clear photo.<br />

These two vessels went to a lovely lady who has supplied me with cording for adding to my creative projects. Its delightful to take what others no longer need or want and make something different out of it. Its serendipitous to be able to give those people something they do want and and would use. Have a wonderful Easter weekend.tess stiebenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14990043775194246617noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7492516578094514967.post-91688259969092939342016-03-17T13:06:00.000-07:002016-03-17T13:06:04.608-07:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Black-capped Chickadee are daily visitors coming to collect black oil sunflower seeds. We always buy seeds and suet from the Wildbird General Store in Edmonton. We discovered years ago that being seed specialists they are very fussy and that cheapo department store seeds are a waste of money as the birds just toss them to the ground. </div>

It is a wonderful feeling when work is juried into an exhibition. Hubby took this shot at the opening. I always leave my spirit open for creativity in any manner that intrigues me. This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to showcase what I have been creating since last summer. Earth Spirit Vessels, created for the love of our earth, its small insect inhabitants and native flowers. It seems that for environmental work I lean towards textiles due its ability to satisfy my sculptural interests.tess stiebenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14990043775194246617noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7492516578094514967.post-87408996697552388282016-01-29T15:17:00.000-08:002016-01-29T15:17:48.170-08:00Birding delights in our own front yard.With excitement I share with you a gift granted to me, the winter birds that blessed us with their presence this past week. The temperature warmed greatly above zero and as the snow melted flocks of birds we had never noticed in our area arrived to gleam seeds from the cones of the fruitful spruce trees that sport a bumper crop of cones way up top.<br />

Male White-winged Crossbills.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In The Birds of Alberta book it says they rarely flock together, so I guess we were really given a gift. These birds stayed mostly in the tree tops. Two days later they were back, this time many were feeding on seeds dropped to the ground. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Crossbills top mandible (jaw, beak) crosses over the lower one. The beak is specifically designed to pry into coniferous cones to gain access to the seeds within. What a wonderful experience to watch this female White-winged Crossbill pry out seeds by jabbing her thin curved beak up under the lip of the cone and wiggle her head back and forth pulling out seeds.</div>

Quite a few years back a commercial printing shop went out of business and I acquired reams of mixed paper for drawing on, printmaking and all round play. So I decided its about time I play with this paper to see how it accepts varied media. The following is Winsor Newton watercolor on 25x23 inch Linen paper. The paper is beautiful, slightly textured which would be great for pencil portraits, but as there is about a one inch pile of it playtime has started. The paper took the water pigment much better than expected. In fact the pigment soaked too well into the paper so I ended up mixing thick pigment fairly dry to get that "pow" strength. </div>

<span style="text-align: center;">Thursday play time. Same theme of bunchberry plants that carpet the forest floor in alberta and BC. A tiny plant pushed to a gigantic size. It was fun, but would I use this paper for watercolor paintings; not likely as it eats up paint. My next test will be to draw on it and test print on the press when plates get designed. So much going on in my head.</span><br />

I loved it, we experienced new to us places, spent a lovely time with family and I started an tiny arts project fitting for living in a tiny space. Of course this project also carries an environmental theme as my previous Nest project does. It also has the mandate of using recycled items as in yarn scraps and beads bought at thrift stores and garage sales rather than new.<br />
<br />
Anyhow, lets go back to the beginning. I knew when we left on our travels that as I need to keep my hands busy to still an over active mind that it would be a good idea to bring along crochet hooks and some yarn I purchased for making hats. Well into the third or fourth day bored with hat making I began playing with small crochet and ended up with a sweet tiny vessel. I was intrigued to stitch up another, so by the time we reached Vancouver Island I had two tiny crocheted vessels. Then to add interest of nature I thought to fill the inside of these vessels with found items that consider tiny environments. Well my wonderful sisters were onboard with my ideas and donated small butterfly brooches and bug fabrics to add to the vessels. Then of course to fit the mandate of found materials we needed to peruse thrift stores for crochet threads, and yarns as well as some small found vessels as all are not going to be crocheted, yet all will have handiwork in or on them.<br />
<br />
The idea incorporates traditional handiwork with nature. The past ideology of grooming young women into marriageable prospects whom learned needle work and placed it into a chest for future use, though before my time I might add. The thought that these chests hold hope for the prospects of the future, for they were called Hope Chests.<br />
<br />
Hope for the future of Nature is my theme. Using needlework and found objects to recreate nature placed within tiny vessels. In a sense Nature is being segregating from self, confined within a tiny vessel.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I'm being inspired by bears we watched last spring in Waterton Lakes National Park. It was a wonderful chilly drizzly windy with periods of sunshine kinda week spent admiring the remote beauty as mountains drifted in and out of sight amongst rain clouds. I love Southern Alberta landscapes where the rolling hills blend up to the mountains. The exception being constant gusting wind everyday, the constant howl does tend to drive one a wee bit crazy after a while.<br />
<br />
Though Grizzly were spotted at higher elevations we pretty much stayed to the lower levels aside from one bitter cold windy rainy afternoon at Cameron Lake. We partially hiked the lakeside trail looking for glacier lilies and thankfully found two of the yellow beauties not too far along the trail as we really were not prepared for the extreme wind chill so headed back to the boat rental place to warm up.<br />
<br />
With the experience ingrained in my spirit and diverse reference photos to work from I composed a few more bear paintings after finishing "Watching the Hikers" Acrylic, on wrapped canvas, 16x24 inches<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvxOHqkqu5EVj3Tt0LfK9M24U0TitJbJK5sN5YzoN0T18wjS1MZfN0c-3LpQ_prJ59hrcjw7eY84qMrsmFV8T8LUAuW6jv9iS43_gbkfj9B-LqkZap6RpOFr5xQDmIw9SnHGbtEYdI3YtU/s1600/IMG_7319.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvxOHqkqu5EVj3Tt0LfK9M24U0TitJbJK5sN5YzoN0T18wjS1MZfN0c-3LpQ_prJ59hrcjw7eY84qMrsmFV8T8LUAuW6jv9iS43_gbkfj9B-LqkZap6RpOFr5xQDmIw9SnHGbtEYdI3YtU/s1600/IMG_7319.JPG" width="310" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Masked Cinnamon Bear in Wildflower Meadow" </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Acrylic on wrapped canvas, 16x16 inches</div>
<br />
I love the face of cinnamon bear as it was dark like a mask. I may at some point do a closer up view of its face but for these paintings the bears are in natural habitat and I want to maintain the impression of being viewed in the wilds, not close up photo-realistic as I tend to do. When out viewing we see form and shape and how light hits that form with contrasted dark shadow. Sometimes the animal is close enough and the light is just right to see their eyes but mostly not. Its more an experience. Excitement increases the adrenaline while almost silent exclamations escape the lips as we breathe out, all the while breathing in the moment, the beauty, the Wow of creation that we are but a tiny part of.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhajvKZFdNP15qDX9NjVhdmjkqCAdh-NhMZyCkgark4bMtlauk0PuZmM2pk0FXoBY8Y66BLmtX99Oa6wG3J2FO-9FyUdqgjmI0XMRrmRNJPJ075vfsKro_5JlzQg9aGJUPWyHlycVt-xxHN/s1600/IMG_7311.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="229" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhajvKZFdNP15qDX9NjVhdmjkqCAdh-NhMZyCkgark4bMtlauk0PuZmM2pk0FXoBY8Y66BLmtX99Oa6wG3J2FO-9FyUdqgjmI0XMRrmRNJPJ075vfsKro_5JlzQg9aGJUPWyHlycVt-xxHN/s1600/IMG_7311.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Rocky Mountain Black Bear"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Acrylic on wrapped canvas, 10 x14 inches</div>
This bear had the most black glossy coat, so shinny and rich looking that I struggled to achieve the look I wanted to portray. Did I get it?<br />
<br />
There is one more on the drawing board of a bear I called Saddle Blanket. We watched Saddle Blanket and his/her mom traverse across an open meadow grubbing for roots and bulbs one eve at dusk. The light was fast receding behind the mountain but we were able to watch them for about ten minutes through our camera lens before them ambled over the hilltop out of view. Yes I view distant wildlife through a 300 prime lens; sure wish I could afford a pair of quality binoculars but with limited funds I make do with what I have.<br />

Picked up a few cast off tools to try out random marking on metal to get my hand back into print-making seeing as I have some old plates to re-work, alter or complete. It will be a new learning curve working with soy-based inks rather than oil based. Going as non-toxic as possible. Hope to get started next month and will try remember to document the process for future reference.<br />

Aside from doing photography a new venture akin to the 3.5 year "Nest Project" has been started, though this one involves crocheting small vessels. Thats all I can say about it for now as I've only completed one though have more are in progress. Amazing, not only was the SkirtsAfire HerArts Festival Fashion Show covered by CBC and CTV News Edmonton but my skirt design was covered further afield.<br />

<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
The following is an article I published to the Edmonton Nature Blog <a href="https://natureedmonton.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">https://natureedmonton.wordpress.com</a></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">In February, delighted to be chosen to design a skirt for SkirtsAfire herArts Festival that celebrates women playwrights, authors, actors, poets, musicians and visual artists I set to the task of creating in 1920 era Flapper style. The mandate that skirts be made of found or reuse items was the key inspiration. A brightly colorful skirt was created from plastic pink and lime green tablecloths and surveyors tape acquired from the Edmonton Reuse Centre. Flowing christmas tinsel, cassette tape ribbon, vegetable netting as well as metal strainer parts that musically jingle and clanked when the skirt was worn were the embellishments. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Edmonton Reuse Centre is a wonderful place to send items that could be reused by parents, teachers and artists in creative projects. Now one may ask what has this got to do with a Nature Blog, well for one it diverts useable items from being landfill, and thats something every citizen can do to help protect nature. Its also a place for creative ideas to blossom, to look at items in a different way and encourage people to seek out new uses for items they generally discard.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTs30w8yNfmJ0LD4lroYDMGZP0zvmi2NKx4XA4r4cB16M9qizGsEmHRZpLksqxGZ8wVAEYUA2GO3y7L6mP4RRUqTCL9SIUn2X2bGG6hwi-E0TQDDsKwa0XoZooLwvJjcotONk5C2MQPkfu/s1600/IMG_0159+-+Version+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTs30w8yNfmJ0LD4lroYDMGZP0zvmi2NKx4XA4r4cB16M9qizGsEmHRZpLksqxGZ8wVAEYUA2GO3y7L6mP4RRUqTCL9SIUn2X2bGG6hwi-E0TQDDsKwa0XoZooLwvJjcotONk5C2MQPkfu/s1600/IMG_0159+-+Version+2.JPG" height="320" width="138" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5FiOUHKDsTjxEx61XGFPfV8AxRq6E0zh9tH4igwKxTXzBr0H3txp3KVHg8lpeLPO32L8DmJIVlef-j-Ro7fJPQsstadZvBLHF9VEI29nUPM-ljtnihecg0MKNmR8MhPRWsMdDzbZuNxlT/s1600/IMG_0161.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5FiOUHKDsTjxEx61XGFPfV8AxRq6E0zh9tH4igwKxTXzBr0H3txp3KVHg8lpeLPO32L8DmJIVlef-j-Ro7fJPQsstadZvBLHF9VEI29nUPM-ljtnihecg0MKNmR8MhPRWsMdDzbZuNxlT/s1600/IMG_0161.JPG" height="320" width="179" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The seven skirts chosen to be designed were showcased in the SkirtsAfire Fashion show broadcast by CBC, CTV News and the Edmonton Journal which kicked off the festival. A photo taken by Greg Southam of me dancing in the colorful plastic skirt was also featured by the Vancouver Sun, Province and the Ottawa Citizen, now thats wonderful coverage. The skirt and vest has since been donated to the Edmonton Reuse Centre and will be displayed in the board room so that others may enjoy it as well. The bonus, a bit of plastic has been diverted from the landfill and kept out of the natural environment.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
</div>

Well no. When I'm not satisfied with the overall look I can't help myself but to jump back in with paint on brush and make changes. At this point in a painting it can go two ways, worse or better. I am happy with all the hours, days that added up to a months worth of work that this painting improved with the extra days work.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
this is the last image I posted which at this point I let the painting rest for a week then took another good look at it. Though it probably was good enough, I could see where it could be pushed further and strengthened by adding more darks into shadow areas and scumbling color into the foreground to integrate it into the rest of the painting.</div>

<div>
This is the completed painting of "Watching the Hikers" it has since rested for over a week and I see no areas that leave me troubled. Done and ready to sign and get an isolation coat painted on to protect the image from dust.</div>

Have a wonderful day.</div>

We walked into the hall and noticed I was the oldest participant, which of course made hubby chuckle and call me an ole boot, Matriarch I corrected him, both chuckling by now. Then someone questioned if I was there to support my daughter, I laughingly replied "no this ole boot is one of the designers who decide to expand her comfort level". I can now say I participated as a designer and model in the SkirtsAfire fashion show media blitz and had a blast. I loved the energy and the coming together of creative women, it was wonderful, its how it should be. Creative women supporting and promoting creativity in women, what a wonderful thing to be a part of. SkirtsAfire is now in its third year and I am so looking towards taking in some of the events. <div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I was the lead out and as my dress is titled "Dance the Night Away" based on 1920 Flapper era I shimmied, shook and twirled, in essence had great fun.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Next up was a fantastic creation by three young students Madison Braget, Brooke Fersovitch and Kaylee Gaines titled "Midnight Truffle" which was made of tarp layers fringed with a duck tape waistband fastened with bottle cap buttons. I loved seeing their youthful creativity they did an excellent job, the bottle cap buttons were in my mind a stroke of genius. Sorry no close up, though hope to take some close up photos on the mannequins when the SkirtsAfire Festival opens.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
"Mas Claro" by Joan McFarlane. Great geometric design by arranging tea towels and bubble wrap. (this one is a runner up)</div>

Can you believe its door screening as the base of this skirt that is covered with receipts and cigarette foils. "Not-your-ordinary Lace Skirt" by Paola Cantal.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Ira Tuzlukova made "Paper Couture" skirt totally out of folded paper, amazing. Founded on the idea of Alexander McQueen couture lines.</div>
<div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
"Save Our Trees, No Flyers Please" by Tessa Stamp and Christie Hutchinson. Tree branches and flyers attached to a burlap base, I love the matching head piece that pulled the woodsy look together. (This is the the winning skirt)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEMfhV9hHKZEM9Hz_PDiJ_jRILb-wAyUncyyt0lwnoUgFLGyXFudRdkfpffJJm5jbuc9fFYt6BQCClfiDj3M1rcB9AXqL_3PtpaXsanuTVWacoFQTUCbsSfnoFXxVJKEkL6yMrU_kZJuTh/s1600/IMG_0198.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEMfhV9hHKZEM9Hz_PDiJ_jRILb-wAyUncyyt0lwnoUgFLGyXFudRdkfpffJJm5jbuc9fFYt6BQCClfiDj3M1rcB9AXqL_3PtpaXsanuTVWacoFQTUCbsSfnoFXxVJKEkL6yMrU_kZJuTh/s1600/IMG_0198.JPG" height="320" width="251" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And "Sleight of Hand" by Kia Day, a fitted Pencil style skirt made from playing cards with a hint of red lace at the leg.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As one can tell the designs are varied, creative, fun and best of all they are made of reuse and upcycle. During the festival all skirts will be on display in the SkirtsAfire Cabaret Space at the Alberta Community League 9210 118th Ave.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I can honestly say I am pleased to have been chosen to be a part of the SkirtsAfire skirt design competition. Well done Ladies.</div>
